N Chandrababu Naidu pitches for shifting HAL AMCA, LCA production to Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh CM and NDA's key ally N Chandrababu Naidu has pitched for moving Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's (HAL) Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) production from Congress-ruled Karnataka to his state. For this purpose, Naidu has proposed 10,000 acres of land for HAL's AMCA production facility at Lepakshi-Madakasira hub, an hour away from the Bengaluru airport.

AMCA is India's fifth generation stealth fighter aircraft which is being developed and manufactured by HAL in collaboration with other private firms. This is a part of Naidu's big-ticket proposal for a defence industrial corridor and India's third after UP and Tamil Nadu, spread across 23,000 acres of land from north to the south of Andhra Pradesh. Naidu has proposed five hubs in this corridor. The CM discussed this with defence minister Rajnath Singh on Friday.

Naidu's requests
* Move AMCA production to Lepakshi-Madakasira hub, which is planned as the largest hub in the defence industrial corridor. According to sources, Naidu pitched that HAL has saturated the Bengaluru ecosystem and needs more land and better policy-driven incentives which Andhra Pradesh can provide.

* Set-up IAF Station at Donakonda, which will be a part of Jaggiahpet-Donakonda hub. The state has identified 6,000 acres of land. The state has proposed an operational air base, logistics centre, training facility and research and development hub for IAF in this.

* Visakhapatnam-Anakapalli hub, proposed over 3,000 acres, is offered for Naval Equipment and Weapons Testing Facility. Naidu has proposed to notify seafront land parcel as a marine and underwater SEZ to support the Eastern Naval Command and the National Advanced Offshore Base. Naidu has also pointed out that HAL, which is anticipating ₹2.5 trillion in orders by 2026-27, is expanding production for LCA and Light Combat Helicopters and his state was eager to facilitate infrastructure to accelerate HAL's expansion plans.

* The fourth hub has been offered for military drone, robotics and advanced defence component manufacturing at Kurnool-Orvakal and will be spread across 4,000 acres,

* The fifth hub is proposed for research and development in defence innovations at Tirupati.

Defence industrial corridors utilise the existing defence manufacturing ecosystems and further build upon it through private investments. The corridors are expected to catalyse indigenous production of defence and aerospace related items reducing our reliance on imports and promoting export to other countries.On a two-day visit to the capital, Naidu met home minister Amit Shah, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, new and renewable energy minister Prahlad Joshi, Jal Shakti minister CR Patil, science and technology minister Dr Jitendra Singh and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Poetry and powerful music: Army's sharp social media tactic hammer in Op Sindoor message

New Delhi: It is the message delivered that matters. While Operation Sindoor showcased India's military prowess and firm stand against terrorism, the armed forces put out sleek social media posts and videos, one with rock renditions of lines from Dinkar's ballad 'Rashmirathi', to drive home the point.

India decimated nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir under Operation Sindoor with precision strikes early on May 7 in response to the dastardly April 22 Pahalgam massacre.

At 1:44 am that day, the government, in a statement, underlined that India has demonstrated "considerable restraint" in the selection of targets and method of execution and that "no Pakistani military facilities have been targeted".

Shortly after, the Indian Army's social media handles carried a poignant message with a poster that has now become a defining image of Operation Sindoor.

Along with the message "#PahalgamTerrorAttack Justice is Served. Jai Hind!" the Indian Army's 1:51 am X post carried a poster that was concise in words but heavy on symbolism.

The poster had 'OPERATION SINDOOR' written on it with a small bowl carrying vermilion (worn by married Hindu women) forming the first 'O' of the second word while the second 'O' had a dash of the powder around it.

Since then, the Indian Army has come up with several thematic short videos on social media platforms that have been widely shared and appreciated.

All these videos were made in-house, by the Social Media Section of the Indian Army's Additional Directorate General of Strategic Communication, sources in the military establishment said.

The songs were carefully chosen, each based on the content and theme, they added.

But a video that has stood out for its lyrical appeal and arresting visuals, is the one that was played just before the press briefing of the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) on Operation Sindoor on May 12.

As the video rolled, a powerful rendition of a key verse from 'Krishna ki Chetavani', a part of Ramdhari Singh Dinkar's timeless classic 'Rashmirathi' echoed. It was a metaphor-laden message delivered to Pakistan by the Indian military with poetic precision.

In the video, the rock music style rendition was juxtaposed with the images of the Indian military assets -- missiles, naval platforms, weapon system, air defence system -- with subtitles.

The Hindi lyrics that played along with the video roughly translates to "When doom hovers over a man, the first thing that vanishes is wisdom... you did not heed wise words, did not recognise the value of friendship... announcing the last resolve. There will be war and not pleading, glory to life or death it will be".

The subtitles of the video carried the words 'prepared', 'each move detected', 'every step watched', 'tracked', 'monitored'.

"The song was specially composed using the specific lines relevant for the theme. The rock music theme was chosen for the effect. The song was created by an in-house team using the latest technology available," a source in the defence establishment told PTI.

A collage of images of the wreckage of Pakistani drones destroyed by the Indian armed forces under Operation Sindoor and a montage of videos showcasing India's military's prowess in all three domains -- land, air and sea -- played on a large screen along with music.

Following the May 7 strikes by India, Pakistan attempted to counterattack on May 8, 9 and 10, but the Indian forces thwarted waves of aerial incursions efficiently.

"The message intended to be conveyed through these music and videos for the audience was that the Indian Army is prepared, ready and capable of using decisive force against India's adversaries.

"Those with nefarious designs against the nation should not lose sight of the Indian Army's might, reach and valour," another source in the defence establishment told PTI.

Before the briefing by the military on May 11, Shiva Tandava Stotram was played on the big screen, setting the tone for the press conference.

A montage of images showing damage inflicted by the Indian military under Operation Sindoor played with subtitles such as -- 'heed our advice', 'terrorism will have a cost for Pakistan', 'heavy', 'inevitable', 'unaffordable'.

India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the military confrontation after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.

COVID-19 cases rise gradually across India; states urge caution as daily count crosses 250

Covid-19 cases in India: India is witnessing an alarming resurgence of COVID-19 cases with new infections reported from Delhi, Haryana, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. As per latest update from the Union Health Ministry, India is having 257 active cases. While the situation is currently under control, health departments are urging the people to be alert and abide with safety protocols.

As per the latest report, Delhi has reported 23 cases, recording its first surge in nearly three years. Health Minister Pankaj Singh has confirmed that all the patients are stable and are under observation. ”Hospitals have been advised to ensure preparedness- beds, oxygen, medicines, and vaccination facilities are in place,” he stated. The city has restarted genome sequencing reporting through official portals.

A gradual surge is reported from across major states

Karnataka: A nine-month-old baby in Bengaluru has tested positive, among 35 active cases across the state, out of which 32 are from the capital. As per an official note, a slow surge in infections in the last 20 days has been recorded. Vulnerable groups like pregnant women, elderly and those who are suffering from chronic illness have been appealed to follow all the COVID-Appropriate behaviour (CAB).

Andhra Pradesh– This state has added four new cases, in which three are from Visakhapatnam and one from Kadapa. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav mentioned that the state is ”fully prepared”, as local health units have been put on alert and testing kits are available.

Kerala: This state continues to be the most affected as it has recorded 273 cases in May. Health Minister Veena George highlighted that the early symptom reporting and district-level vigilance to be increased. The public has been advised to avoid making unnecessary visits, and wearing mask is mandatory while visiting a hospital.

Uttar Pradesh: Four new COVID-19 cases have been reported from Ghaziabad. The local health authorities have strengthened the surveillance guidelines. According to District Surveillance Officer Dr RK Gupta have stated that all four cases have come from the Trans-Hindon region. Out of the four patients, three are been under home isolation and one is getting treatment at a private hospital. The health department has started contact tracing and has stepped up the monitoring across the affected area to prevent further transmission.

Haryana: This state has recorded four mild cases till now, all of whom are under home isolation. Monitoring is currently going on the developments. Health Minister Arti Singh Roa mentioned, ”There is no need to panic. The virus is manageable, and prior vaccination has reduced its severity.”

Shubman Gill becomes India's 37th Test captain, Rishabh Pant vice-captain for England tour

Shubman Gill has been appointed India's 37th Test captain, with the BCCI confirming the decision during the senior selection committee meeting in Mumbai on Saturday, May 24. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia met at the board headquarters to pick a 18-man squad for the 5-Test series against England, starting June 20 at Headingley.

Rishabh Pant was named as Shubman Gill's deputy for the tour of England. The likes of Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh were handed maiden call-ups in Test cricket. In a big call, Mohammed Shami was not picked due to fitness issues while the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj made it to the 18. India A captain, Abhimanyu Easwaran, who has been travelling witht the squad, gets another opportunity.

Gill takes over from Rohit Sharma, who stepped away from Test cricket in May. Gill has been picked ahead of Jasprit Bumrah, who had already captained India in three Tests, including two matches in the absence of Rohit in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

"You don't pick captain for one or two series. We have to think long term. In the last year or so, we have looked at Shubman in the previous times even when we played England last year. He has made a lot of impact in the dressing room," chief selector Ajit Agarkar said after announcing the squad on Saturday.

At 25, Gill has become one of the youngest players to hold the position in recent years. Though he lacks captaincy experience in the red-ball format, he has led India in a five-match T20I assignment in Zimbabwe in 2024. Gill has also been captained Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League.

Gill has led in only five first-class matches, winning only one of them with Punjab.

Gill has also served as vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is. He was Rohit Sharma's deputy in india's victorious Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE in February 2025.

In Test cricket, Gill has played 32 matches and scored 1,893 runs, including five centuries. His elevation to the role signals a forward-looking decision by the selectors, favouring long-term continuity as the team transitions into a new World Test Championship cycle.

However, there are concerns over whether captaincy has been thrust upon Gill, who is yet to cement his place in the Test side. To date, Gill has scored 559 runs in 13 matches in SENA countries and the West Indies, averaging just 25, with only two fifties in 24 innings. Since his match-winning 91 in the famous Brisbane Test in 2021, Gill has yet to score a half-century in any of these regions.

Gill now steps into the forefront of leadership at a time when the team is undergoing a generational shift - both in personnel and approach. Ever since India failed to qualify for the 2023-2025 World Test Championship final, following back-to-back series defeats to New Zealand at home and then to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, there has been growing speculation about India looking to revamp their Test side with young faces at the forefront.

With Shubman Gill taking charge and leading a relatively young squad in the wake of retirements from senior figures like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, fans will be hopeful that he can guide India into a new phase marked by consistency and success.

Data Shorts: LSG's overseas trio makes perfect antidote to Titans bowling attack

The exploits of Gujarat Titans' top three in IPL 2025 have garnered accolades from all corners, and rightly so, but closely following their heels are LSG's overseas trio of Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran. The trio has formed their top three largely, except for a couple of instances when Rishabh Pant chipped in.

In terms of average, LSG's top three is only below that of Titans, while only Punjab's top three score quicker. Their 16 fifty-scores are again only one below that of Titans' 17, while the 93 sixes combined is the highest in the tournament. The trio became the first from overseas, where each of them aggregated 400+ runs in an IPL season for a team.

LSG having managed to stitch together just six wins, of which two have come against Titans - the table toppers, who have lost only two out of their 11 games against other opponents. Titans, in whose ranks three bowlers have donned the Purple Cap at various times in the season, have managed to pick only six wickets in two games against LSG. GT attack average 69.50 and have a strike rate of 39.5 against LSG, both the worst for them against an opposition in IPL 2025.

Titans' seam attack is largely comprised of tall, hit the deck bowlers in the likes of Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Ishant Sharma. Coming into Thursday's contest, Titans' seamers exploits of good length or shorter than good length in IPL 2025 was second only to that of Mumbai Indians, as per data logs. Against LSG in Ahmedabad, they bowled 65 balls in these areas and conceded 116 runs for the solitary wicket of Marsh in the penultimate over of the innings.

Following the trails of their seam attack is the accomplished spin duo of Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore. In the two games the pair bowled 20 balls to Pooran, who has hit seven sixes of these to score 55 runs at a SR of 275. Pooran's assault on Sai Kishore in Lucknow was so brutal that Titans' skipper didn't entrust the bowler to complete his quota of four overs in the four subsequent games.

Pooran is heralded as the best contemporary striker of spin bowling and is striking at 264 and averaging 75 against spin this IPL. As notable has been the improvement for Marsh and Markram against spin. Coming to this season, Marsh averaged 21.44 at a SR 105 against spin in IPL, while the same for Markram read 26.22 and 126. This year, both are striking north of 150 while averaging 66 and 52, respectively. Even more notable is their numbers against away spin (left arm orthodox + leg break combined); Marsh averages 77 and scores at 160 while Markram is doing it at 37 and 150. Marsh took down Rashid Khan for 25 runs off his first over of the day, which effectively kick-started the surge for LSG from 107 off the first 11 to 128 off the last nine overs.

It has been Titans' bowling attack that has largely held their oppositions at bay, and then letting their top three do their thing. But LSG have shown a way to disrupt the apple cart, and other teams would be looking to follow the trail as the business end of the tournament approach.

Gold and silver prices in your city, May 24: The prices of the yellow metal rose amid uncertainty over the United States economy and a weaker US Dollar (USD). With the volatility in the equities market, gold and silver have emerged as safe-haven investments, according to investors.

Considering the returns, gold prices have gained nearly 30 per cent year-on-year (YoY), and as an investment, it has returned 15 per cent CAGR since 2001. From 1995 onwards, gold has beaten inflation by over 2-4 per cent, according to data.

The MCX gold index was at ₹96,400/10 gm at 8:30 am on Saturday, May 24, the official website showed. Meanwhile, MCX silver prices were at ₹97,935/kg, as per MCX data.
